Azerbaijan has a long and rich tradition of carpet weaving, passed down through generations, primarily by women. Younger artisans learn the techniques from experienced weavers, making carpet weaving an essential skill for young girls. "Azerkhalcha," an organization with a history of around 100 years, played a vital role in the history of modern Azerbaijani carpet weaving. Over the centuries, the demand for Azerbaijani carpets has grown globally, leading to further developments in the industry. In 1927, the "Azerkhalcha" Production Union was founded, bringing together several carpets weaving workshops and marking a significant milestone in the craft's history.
Heydar Aliyev, the national leader of Azerbaijan, played a pivotal role in the development and promotion of Azerbaijani carpet culture during the latter half of the 20th century. His active participation in the inauguration of the Azerbaijan State Carpet Museum on April 26th, 1972, was instrumental in safeguarding and popularizing the rich history and exquisite artistry of Azerbaijani carpets.=
On May 5th, 2016, President Ilham Aliyev established the "Azerkhalcha" Open Joint-Stock Company, which marked a significant milestone in the preservation and advancement of Azerbaijani carpet weaving. This move signalled a new chapter in the legacy of Azerbaijani carpet weaving, ensuring its continued growth and adaptation to modern times.
In November 2010, Azerbaijani carpets were included in UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This was a significant moment for the national heritage. Mehriban Aliyeva, the First Vice President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, initiated this recognition during the 5th Session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage in Nairobi, Kenya.
We, at Azerkhalcha, are a team of approximately 500 female artisans from rural areas, ranging from 18 to 80 years old. We operate 14 studios across various regions of Azerbaijan, and our primary goal is to preserve and promote the traditional art of carpet weaving. Our mission goes beyond just craftsmanship; we are committed to social integration, providing optimal working conditions, and boosting motivation among our skilled female artisans. By purchasing a handmade carpet from us, you directly support at least one woman from the region, empowering her and contributing to her livelihood.
We also embrace innovation and collaboration with modern artists and designers, merging traditional techniques with contemporary aesthetics to ensure the continued relevance and longevity of Azerbaijani carpet weaving.
